Acne Just Won't Go Away?

In your 30s and still popping that zit? Well then you know acne is not just for teenagers. Besides hormonal causes such as PMS, PCOS, increased androgen levels etc., acne can also be caused by other underlying issues.

Food Sensitivity

You can have a delayed hypersensitive reaction to certain foods which causes inflammation throughout the body. This can result in your skin breaking out with acne. Common food sensitivities are gluten, dairy and eggs.

Try an elimination diet to find out if your acne is due to such reactions.

Stress

Chronic stress is linked to acne. Why? Stress affects the gut lining causing toxins, foreign antigens and microorganisms to enter the blood stream. This then causes inflammation which causes acne.

Manage your stress levels- meditate, sleep, read, pain, exercise. Basically do the things that relax you.

Too few healthy fats

Omega 3 and Omega 6 protect your skin if they are consumed in the right proportion. Omega3:Omega6 should be 4:1. However, with modern processed food, its more likely around 25:1 (Omega6:Omega3)- which means its reversed and the ratio is completely off. Higher Omega 6 is pro-inflammatory which leads to acne.

Reduce consumption of processed foods and industrialised oils.

Increase consumption of eggs, walnuts, flaxseeds and other omega 3 boosting foods.

Too much sugar

Too much sugar messes with your gut bacteria. This makes the ecosystem of your gut imbalanced.

Consume whole foods- protein, good fats and complex carbohydrates.

Bad skin care products

How many skin care products do you use in a day? Topical skin care treatments are not the solution to acne problems in the long term. These products contain chemicals which can cause endocrine disruption.

Always choose natural or ayurvedic skincare products. I personally love products from Khadi, the Mom's Company and Biotique.
